It is now exactly one year ago that I decided to actively invest time and effort into what is now my fitness routine. I’ve been sharing lots of insights into my routine, progress and active lifestyle on my Instagram. One thing I get asked over and over again, though, is how to build a routine you can stick to, where to start and whether I can share my top tips for fitness beginners.
5 Fitness Tips for Beginners
1: Start Slow
In the first few days/weeks after planning on integrating a more active lifestyle, we tend to become overly enthusiastic. During this time it is important to set realistic goals and start slow, rather than jumping right into a 6 days a week routine.
2: Mix it up and find YOUR workout
To me, there’s nothing more demoralizing than signing up for a class and realizing you kind of hate it after just two sessions. If you don’t like the workout you are doing, chances are you will not be able to stick to it for a longer period of time. Don’t go to the gym because everyone else is doing it. Try different workouts, mix it up from time to time and find your perfect workout mix.
4: Set Specific Goals
Figuring out what you want to achieve, why you want to achieve it and you plan on going after that goal sets you up for success. It is a lot easier to keep on going if you know where you want to be. Make sure your goals are attainable and motivated by intrinsic factors, rather than solely extrinsic motivators. This way you will much rather be able to see the long-time result and stick to your plan and routine.
Extrinsic Goals are goals that are motivated by outside
factors, such as looking a certain way or fitting into a certain size.
Intrinsic factors are much more tangible for your brain and thus the factors that will keep you working on your goals. This could be your health, your fitness levels or fun.
5: Have a Plan
Once you know what your goal is and how you plan on pursuing it, it is a good idea to set up a plan. Ultimately, having a plan will help you stay motivated and will tailor your fitness routine to your goals. The best thing to do would be to hire a trainer, who can help you in finding the best workout routine for your body, schedule and goal. However, I know this isn’t always so easy/affordable. Keep in mind that you can also consult one of the many websites catering to fitness and healthy living. There are so many resources out there.
Accept that you’ll have setbacks, and that’s OK. Not every day will be amazing and sometimes you won’t feel like hitting the gym for an entire week. Sometimes your progress will stall or even backfire and that’s ultimately not a bad thing.
The only thing constant in life is change, so we should be prepared to adapt and be kind to ourselves. Fitness should not be about finding an easy fix but about integrating activity, sports, and a healthy diet into your lifestyle for the long run.
