At the beginning of November, I was invited to spend a weekend of yoga and wellness at the Naturhotel Forsthofgut in Leogang, Austria. The premise of starting my day with yoga, going to the spa and reading a good book in silence immediately drew me in. I had already seen plenty of pictures of the luxury hotel on Instagram. So of course when they invited me to check out the wellness hotel in the Austrian mountains I was happy to get into the car and drive there.
Facts & Figures
The Naturhotel Forsthofgut was established in 1617.
It currently employs about 160 staff members. There are 2 hectors of enclosure for wild animals and a 3500 m2 zoo for kids with mini pigs, rabbits, ponies and chicken.
In 2018 GEO Saison awarded the Naturhotel Forsthofgut “Most Beautiful Wellness Hotel in Europe”.
Staying in one of their suites and sleeping in a bed fit for a King
Once we arrived at the Naturhotel Forsthofgut we were surprised with a welcome drink at the Bar and shown to our room. The suite we were kindly hosted in was very traditionally Austrian, featuring warm colours, rustic elements and chic design. There was a lot of wood, leather and stone incorporated into the interior design of the room and you immediately felt very at home.
I personally find the room very important when it comes to a wellness hotel. It usually is what either makes or breaks the stay for me. And the team at Forsthofgut certainly did a great job here. The devil lies in the detail. And they spared no effort to make the stay as pleasant as possible – with a water bottle and apples on the coffee table, a pillow menu to choose from on the bed and a yoga mat and weights in the closet for a quick little workout in the room.
Mind, Body and Soul: The Yoga and Fitness at the Naturhotel Forsthofgut in Leogang
I was most excited about the idea of starting each day with a wonderful yoga session in their own yoga room, overlooking the Austrian mountains and checking out their 300 m2 fitness studio. And oh boy, let me tell you. It was incredible. All through November, they offer at least one yoga session per day as part of their November Yoga Specialfor free. You don’t even need to bring any gear, as they have mats, yoga blocks, straps, and meditation cushions ready for you in the room. Whenever the room is not being used by one of the many fitness classes they offer in house, you can go there yourself and do your own routine.
Additionally, you can access the hotel gym 24 hours a day and power through a cardio session overlooking the forest, or lift some weights. The Forsthofgut has one of the best equipped hotel gyms I have ever seen. If you want to get sporty in the water, you can opt to swim a few rounds in their 25 m outdoor pool in the most stunning scenery.
If you are more into outdoor sports and weather allows it, there are 5 different hiking paths along the hotel area that you can explore with one of their local guides. Or you simply check out the Leogang Card and head up the mountain yourself.
Life is better in the mountains: Wellness at the WaldSPA
What makes this luxurious wellness hotel so unique is their waldSPA and the amazing new wellness area. On over 2000 m2 you will find an adults-only spa area with four different saunas, an outdoor whirlpool and a sports pool to swim in. Additionally, there are two big quiet rooms to curl up in and read. During my stay, it started snowing outside while I was reading my book in one of the comfy beds in front of the fireplace. Absolute bliss!
You can definitely feel the strong connection to nature the architects and owners of the luxury hotel have tried to incorporate into each part of the hotel. There are lots of windows outside, giving way to the most amazing scenery in Leogang and wood, stone and other natural elements are the key components of every room.
The ForsthofgutKÜCHE: regional, healthy and focused on sustainability
One of the most important things for me when going away is good food. Especially, when I plan on eating at the hotel every day, it simply needs to be good. And the ForsthofgutKüche didn’t disappoint. Everything they cook is made from regional and seasonal produce, 100% package-free and a lot of the ingredients either come from their own farm or neighbors.
For breakfast, they open their 200 m2 big “Genussmarkt”, a breakfast buffet organized as a market place with different stalls for cheese, meat, home-baked bread, and fresh fruit. There were lots of vegan options for breakfast and even a coffee bar, which was amazing. Ever so often breakfast buffets at hotels only offer coffee from a machine and I was particularly excited about the delicious soy cappuccino they prepared for me each morning.
The Naturhotel Forsthofgut has two different restaurants. One is a traditional Austrian á la Carte restaurant, and the other one their awarded fancy restaurant. At dinner, they offer three menus to chose from Alpine, R50, and Vegan. Alpine meant the ingredients and dishes cooked for this menu, come from either Italy, France, Germany, Slovenia, Liechtenstein or Austria. R50, on the other hand, only incorporated ingredients that come from a 50-kilometer radius from the hotel. The focus in the kitchen certainly was on healthy and sustainable options, which I loved.
Yoga & Wellness at the Naturhotel Forsthofgut in Leogang
The only “negative” thing I have to mention is that they charged 3,50 € for their tap water at dinner. I personally do not agree with that policy, as I could have just gone to my room and gotten the exact same water for free. Especially when you pay that much for room and food, I kind of expect tap water to be included in the bill.
Everything else, however, was absolutely perfect and the Naturhotel Forsthofgut certainly is one of a kind. The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful. The food was delicious, even if it certainly wasn’t enough for me at dinner. That aspect didn’t matter too much, though, as I simply stocked up on veggies and dessert at their buffet. The waldSPA areal is beautiful and architecture wise simply remarkable. And the yoga was absolutely marvelous.
I really enjoyed my little spa getaway to the Naturhotel Forsthofgut and will certainly be back whenever they offer another yoga special in the future. There is just something so calming and meditative about starting your day with yoga, heading to breakfast and then having a lie-in and sauna session after a walk through the stunning nature in Leogang, Salzburg.
